Sennheiser Momentum 5: Headphones with replaceable batteries

The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 will be one of the most important releases in the premium wireless headphone space for 2026, and it’s not just their sound quality that’s the reason. Sennheiser has announced that its new flagship earbuds feature user -replaceable batteries — a revolutionary change for the category. It’s a game-changer for the true wireless earbuds industry, where battery failure has previously meant replacing the entire device.

The Momentum 5 will be available starting September 3rd for $299.95 — the same price as the Momentum 4 , which launched in early 2024. Available color options include five metallic shades: lavender, copper, denim, graphite, and cream. The company positions the product around three core values: comfort, stability, and portability — but the most significant change remains the ability to replace the battery.

The design philosophy behind the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 reflects a broader industry shift towards sustainability and product longevity. Instead of using glue to seal the internal components — as most manufacturers do — Sennheiser designed the headphones so that the user can access the battery with a simple screwdriver. The same goes for the charging case, which also has a replaceable battery.

Sennheiser Momentum 5: Why replaceable batteries change everything

The problem with modern true wireless earbuds is well-known: the small lithium batteries used in them lose a significant portion of their capacity after a few years of daily charging. This makes earbuds among the most “consumable” electronic products on the market. Right -to-repair have repeatedly pointed out that the sealed construction of the earbuds is essentially a “time bomb” for their lifespan. With the Momentum 5, Sennheiser gives users the opportunity to extend the life of their device.

It’s worth noting that replaceable batteries are gradually making a comeback in consumer electronics, thanks in part to European sustainability regulations that will come into effect in early 2027.Companies like Fender and Glorious have already introduced over-ear headphones with replaceable batteries, but adoption of the technology in earbuds has been slow due to the small size and weight requirements. The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 join a very small group of earbuds that allow the user to replace the battery themselves — along with the Fairphone Fairbuds.

For comparison, the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Eleven, which launched in late 2024, have replaceable batteries, but require a return to the manufacturer for a technician to replace them. Other headphones only allow battery replacement in the charging case. Sennheiser goes a step further, giving the user full access to both the headphones and the case.

Sennheiser Momentum 5: Technical specifications and improvements

Beyond the replaceable batteries, the Momentum 5 brings significant improvements on several levels. Battery life has been increased to up to 12 hours per charge for the earbuds themselves or up to 40 hours combined with the charging case — a significant improvement over the Momentum 4 , which lasted 7.5 hours on its own or 30 hours with the case. The charging case is now slimmer and compatible with Qi wireless charging.

In terms of audio experience, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 support Dolby Atmos and spatial audio with interactive head tracking — a feature that was previously only available on the Apple AirPods Pro . The adaptive ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) system has been revised and works with newly designed ear tips for better noise isolation. In addition, Bluetooth 6.0 support and a new “ robust mode ” promise a more stable connection in environments with a lot of interference — such as airports, subways or busy offices.

According to The Verge, the replaceable battery is a key feature of the new headphones, with critics noting that it's a design choice that more companies should adopt. However, there's a practical caveat: the real value of a replaceable battery depends on the availability and price of replacement parts. If replacement parts are hard to find or prohibitively expensive, the repairability advantage is significantly diluted.

Momentum 5 and the premium earbuds market: What it means for the competition

Sennheiser ’s move puts pressure on major competitors in the category — Apple , Sony , Bose and Samsung — who continue to offer sealed earbuds without battery replacement . If a mainstream premium manufacturer can provide replaceable batteries without sacrificing the premium feel of the product, competitors will face increasing pressure to follow suit. Repairability is gradually becoming a mainstream consumer expectation.

For users, the biggest benefit is a lower total cost of ownership. Instead of replacing a premium pair of $299.95 after 2-3 years due to battery wear, users will be able to buy a new battery and continue using their device. This is especially important in the era of the circular economy, where reducing e-waste is a priority for both consumers and regulators.
