The hacking attack carried out against the American retail company, Target, led to a massive data breach.
The attackers managed to steal the personal information of 70 million customers, including names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and credit card.
The sensitive data, which was collected without encryption by the company, was intercepted by hackers between November 27 and December 15.
"We know it's disappointing for our customers to learn that this information was compromised, and we're sorry they're having to endure this," Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel said.
The company will provide all customers affected by the attack with free security services for one year. The identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, while investigations to identify them are ongoing.
