Microsoft is removing Teams' Together Mode

Microsoft has announced the removal of Together Mode from Teams, one of the most iconic features introduced during the pandemic to create a sense of physical presence in virtual meetings. The change will be completed gradually as the company shifts towards a more simplified user experience focused on efficiency.

Microsoft removes Together Mode from Teams

Together Mode launched in July 2020, at the height of the shift to remote work due to COVID-19. The feature used advanced artificial intelligence and AI-based background segmentation to “cut out” the head and shoulders of each participant from their video and place them in a shared virtual space, creating the illusion that everyone was in the same conference room. While it could seem gimmicky — especially with features like “tapping” colleagues on the shoulder or virtual high-fives — it helped reduce the visual distractions caused by the traditional “grid of boxes” of video calls.

According to Microsoft, the phase-out of Teams Together Mode will begin in early June 2026 and will be completed by the end of the same month, affecting all Teams versions including GCC, GCC High , and DoD. As the changes are gradually implemented globally, the Together Mode will disappear from the view menu, while special features such as custom scenes, seat assignments, and the ability to create branded virtual environments that many companies had adopted for corporate events will also be removed.

Microsoft Teams: Strategic reasons behind the removal of Together Mode

Microsoft is justifying the move as part of a broader effort to reduce fragmentation across platforms and simplify the user interface . The company is aiming for a streamlined interface with fewer options, fewer clicks, and less confusion for users, while also redirecting development resources toward more meaningful improvements. This shift will allow Microsoft to focus on improving Teams ’ video quality, stability, and performance , as well as developing more advanced AI-driven features that deliver real productivity value.

It's worth noting that Microsoft hasn't released usage statistics for Together Mode, which likely suggests low user adoption despite initial enthusiastic reception. The company typically doesn't remove widely used enterprise features without a detailed transition guide or workarounds.

Microsoft Teams Together Mode removes virtual meetings

The removal of Together Mode reflects a broader trend in the post-pandemic collaboration software market, where priorities have shifted from visual innovation to practical efficiency. While during 2020-2021 companies invested in innovative features to make remote meetings more engaging and combat “Zoom fatigue,” the market has now shifted toward efficiency, simplicity, and AI-powered productivity tools. Competitors like Zoom, Google Meet , and Cisco Webex have also moved toward simplified, standardized layouts instead of immersive “visual room” experiences, focusing more on features like real-time transcription, AI summaries, and intelligent meeting assistance.

Technical specifications and transitional instructions

Technically, the removal of Together Mode means that IT administrators will no longer have access to admin policies or settings to maintain or re-enable the feature. Microsoft has made it clear that there is no way to override this change through corporate settings. Organizations that relied on Together Mode for educational purposes or branded corporate events should prepare to transition to alternative solutions. It is recommended that IT teams start informing users and reviewing internal processes for meetings now.

This move shows that Microsoft sees limited future value in immersive “fake room” meeting layouts compared to the AI-driven productivity features that are the future of corporate collaboration. Expect greater investment in Copilot-style meeting assistance, intelligent summaries and action items, real-time transcription and translation capabilities, as well as more adaptive gallery and presenter layouts that dynamically adjust to the needs of each meeting.

Microsoft is removing Teams' Together Mode

According to The Verge, this change reflects Microsoft to simplify Teams after years of feature stacking that created complexity without commensurate value. For organizations, the message is clear: treat Together Mode as a pandemic-era feature with a limited lifecycle, not a long-term pillar of the platform. They need to prepare for a future where value comes from intelligence and efficiency rather than visual innovation.
