Northern Greece will be dressed in Google's colors, specifically the venue of the Thessaloniki International Exhibition from November 7-10, as it will be held for the first time in southeastern Europe, the Google DevFest (Developers Festival / Developers Festival) with the initiative of the Google Developers Group (GDG) Thessaloniki.
The Google DevFest, which can be described as the celebration of technology, is being organized for the first time in our country, specifically in the city of Thessaloniki. The event is an initiative of the Google Developers Thessaloniki community and its central focus is not only theoretical learning but also practical training of the people who will attend it. Internationally recognized developers from the Google community will share their knowledge and passion. This groundbreaking movement of the Google Developers community has the support and backing of the DETH – Helexpo and will take place at the International Exhibition.
DevFests are large-scale events that take place worldwide by the various Google Developers communities. They always follow the tradition of «Google DevFests» and their differentiation lies in the fact that each organization is shaped within the framework of the needs of the Developers community that runs it. The central idea of the whole festival is that participants, through a series of talks and workshops/ worklabs, will be able to learn how to develop their own mobile and web applications, while simultaneously experiencing first-hand the latest technologies and tools from Google.
During the four days, those who attend the DET venue will have the opportunity to feel up close the pulse of the most modern and advanced technologies. Some examples of innovations that those who attend this exhibition will have the opportunity to see and get to know are the following:
• Google Glass: This technology is not merely a quintessential example of technology and the way we perceive it… One could say, without exaggerating, that essentially we are dealing with the milestone of a new era of interactivity between humans and technology. The reason why this particular innovation is important lies in the fact that with Google Glass, but also more generally with the «Wearable» technology (that is, the one you wear on yourself), the entire generation of technology we had become accustomed to changes, since the user interacts with his environment without technology intervening between them in the way we had been used to until today.
• Google Cloud Developer Challenge: This is an ideas competition (brainstorming as the organizers call it among themselves) that gives developers the opportunity to develop and submit their idea to Google. This idea will be based on Google Cloud, and can claim prizes up to $20,000. The Google Developers Thessaloniki community offers, in turn, $2,000 (in Google Cloud services) to those who attend on the 7th of the month in the afternoon for the discussion around ideas / proposals for the Google Cloud Developer Challenge, as well as teams who want to develop these ideas for the much-discussed “cloud”.
• AnDevCon San Francisco: AnDevCon is the most important Android programming conference, which offers programming education for mobile applications. The Google Developers Thessaloniki community gives you the opportunity to win one of the 15 free entry tickets to the conference! At this event participants will have the opportunity through 70 –and more- programming lessons for applications and to raise their level in Android programming through practical practice. Also, they will be given the chance to talk with prominent Android developers as well as with the speakers in a more relaxed environment during coffee breaks, meals, as well as at the «Networking Reception». AnDevCon will take place in San Francisco, 12 to 15 November 2013.
• Additionally, there will be a presentation of Android 4.4, the much-anticipated latest operating system from Google for Android smartphones. All the different features and the distinct, new and differentiated functions that it offers to the user will be presented and analyzed.
• Another important part of the event will be the direct connection with the “The Great YouTube Studio of New York” where chatting – (via Google Hangouts) – with top Google developers, the most modern way in which the well‑known YouTube can be integrated into contemporary mobile and web applications will be presented and analyzed.
• Finally, during the four‑day DevFest event, Greek and foreign companies will have the opportunity to interact both with each other and with developers on technology matters, etc. This interaction will aim to transfer and exchange technology between small and large companies from the tech field and beyond.
The initiative of the Google Developers Thessaloniki is being presented for the first time to the audience of Greece and the Balkans and will bring a different rhythm not only to the city of Thessaloniki and the DETH – Helexpo that embrace this institution but also more broadly to the Greek sphere. Moreover, it is more than certain that with the arrival of such a distinctive event in our country, it will become evident that… when innovation and pioneering thought meet productivity and when many Developers/ Programmers gather in one place to exchange ideas, only then can shocking, significant and “ungraspable” things happen and everything can change!
