Netanyahu tries to prove he is not an AI deepfake clone

Benjamin Netanyahu is at the center of conspiracy theories claiming he has been replaced by deepfake artificial intelligence technology. Social media is awash with posts claiming the Israeli prime minister has been killed or injured and replaced by AI-generated videos. The situation highlights how difficult it has become to distinguish reality from artificial content in the age of advanced deepfakes.

The conspiracy theories began after a live-streamed press conference by Netanyahu on Friday. A clip of the broadcast was widely shared by social media users , who claim the video shows the Israeli prime minister with six fingers on his right hand. Older generative AI tools have historically had problems reproducing hands, which has fueled speculation that Israel is using deepfake videos to cover up Netanyahu ’s death in an Iranian missile strike.

On closer inspection, the “extra” finger can easily be explained by the degradation of the video quality and even the lighting. Fact checkers including Snopes and the Poynter Institute ’s Politifact have debunked claims that the video was AI- generated . The video’s length, at nearly 40 minutes , is far longer than the maximum clip lengths that current AI video models can produce .

Netanyahu responds to deepfake accusations with new video

In an attempt to put an end to the AI clone conspiracy theories , Netanyahu posted a video on his X account showing him in a cafe, asking the person behind the camera to count his fingers. However, social media users quickly pointed out apparent visual inconsistencies, suggesting that the video was also an AI deepfake .

Some of these comments have merit, pointing out moments in the video that show liquid moving unnaturally inside the coffee cup in Netanyahu, and the ring on his finger disappearing and reappearing on the surrounding skin, although this could also be explained by the video’s degradation. The background environment has also been called into question – the cash register on the counter appears to display a date from 2024, for example.

Deepfakes emerged in 2017 when a Reddit user named “deepfakes” shared AI-generated pornographic videos using generative adversarial networks (GANs) , raising widespread awareness of synthetic media manipulation. Rapid advances in neural networks , transformers , and multimodal AI since 2020 have made deepfakes increasingly realistic, allowing for face replacements, voice cloning, and video alterations with over 92 % detection evasion in some cases.

The deepfake detection market is soaring due to threats

The deepfake detection market is growing rapidly due to the increasing threats of synthetic media. Key players include Reality Defender and Regula , with machine learning-based detectors (using AI/ML ) predicted to hold over 60% share by 2027. Trends favor real-time, cloud-based solutions ( 61.8% market share in 2024 ), video/image detection ( 66.7% share ), and multimodal analysis for social media ( 45% of implementations ).

Detection platforms remove 2.4 million deepfake videos per month on social media, while leading systems achieve 92%+ accuracy through neural networks and real-time analysis. 90% of businesses in Mexico and 86% in Singapore/UAE use biometrics along with detection for verification.

Conspiracy theories like those targeting Netanyahu are eroding public trust, fueling geopolitical disinformation and pushing platforms to invest in detection. Companies face fraud and reputational risks, prompting major investments, while governments develop systems for security and the media for fact-checking. The industry is seeing a dynamic “arms race”: advanced deepfake technology is driving up detection R&D costs , but at the same time spurring innovation in scalable AI tools , the source said .
