The new smartphone was developed by Google again in collaboration with LG.
Google has officially announced the new smartphone in the Nexus series. The Nexus 5, which, like the previous model, was developed in collaboration with LG. So, in terms of design, as well as many of the subsystems it incorporates, the "smart" mobile is quite reminiscent of the LG G2, the new "flagship" of the Korean company.
More specifically, the Nexus 5 features a 4.95-inch Full HD display with fairly small bezels. It also incorporates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 2 GB of RAM. Which means that in terms of performance it is on par with the best Android phones on the market.
In addition to the faster speed, another significant upgrade compared to the Nexus 4 is that it supports 4G networks. The new model will be released in two versions, with 16 and 32 GB of storage, while it also features an 8 Megapixel main camera with optical stabilization and a new lens that, as Google claims, improves night shots.
The Nexus 5 is already available in the US for $349 through the Google Play Store, and is the first to ship with the new Android 4.4 (KitKat). The new version of Google's operating system comes with an improved phone app, a new Hangouts update that integrates SMS with other forms of online communication, and makes wireless printing easier. It also integrates even more Google services.
However, perhaps the most important change it brings is that it has lower memory requirements, meaning it can be installed even on devices with just 512 MB of RAM. This means it puts an end to the era where low- and mid-range phones shipped with an older version of Android and were never upgraded.
As Google's Sundar Pichai specifically stated, Android 4.4 (KitKat) enables every manufacturer to equip all devices released in 2014 with the "freshest" version of the operating system.
