Online dialogue can have positive effects for young people
A new British study is attempting to shed light on the effects of the internet on young people. Specifically, scientists attempted to examine the role of forums and chatrooms and whether their use can lead to suicide and self-harm in young people.
Researchers at Oxford University analyzed 14 different studies related to young people and the influence of the internet. The point they made was that online dialogue can have positive effects on young people, without ignoring the negative experiences recorded in studies.
Thus, they highlighted dangers such as bullying and self-harm, speaking of a close connection between internet forums and the increased risk of suicide.
On the other hand, they noted that some research highlights the beneficial effects of online dialogue on isolated individuals as well as emotionally "vulnerable" young people.
There are examples where forum users provided psychological support, encouraging help-seeking. This resulted in young people being significantly helped to socialize and ultimately cope with their problem.
"Communication via the internet and other electronic media can play a crucial role in preventing suicide and providing broader psychological support to young people," said Professor Keith Houghton, one of the study's authors
The research was published in the scientific journal Plos One.
