Apple has announced the new budget MacBook Neo, powered by the same A18 Prothat was released two years ago in the iPhone 16 series.

This new model could help Apple compete with Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops. With the older M-series MacBooks being retired, the MacBook Neo offers a cheaper alternative that competes with Windows and ChromeOS models, while using hardware that was already in mass production for other devices.

The MacBook Neo features a 13-inch display, 8GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, a Magic Keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, 1080p camera, two USB-C ports, a headphone jack , and new speakers that support spatial audio and Dolby Atmos. It comes in four colors: silver, indigo, blush, and citrus, each with a color-matching keyboard.

The MacBook Neo comes several years after the 12-inch MacBook was discontinued in 2019, limiting the MacBook lineup to just the Air and Pro models. The classic white MacBook, which was discontinued in 2012, also occupied a similar budget niche in the Mac family. The MacBook Neo's relatively low starting price could be especially appealing after Apple announced the M5 MacBook Air on Tuesday, which has a higher starting price than its predecessor.

MacBook Neo: A useful and economical choice

Apple's move to introduce a budget MacBook can be seen as a strategy to attract students, professionals, and general users looking for a reliable yet affordable laptop. The use of the A18 Pro, which has already been tested and used in iPhones, offers a balance between performance and cost, making the MacBook Neo an attractive option for those looking to enter the Apple ecosystem without spending a fortune.

Additionally, the inclusion of features like spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support, as well as a variety of colors, show that Apple isn't sacrificing quality and aesthetics to achieve a lower price. These features, combined with the reliability of the macOS operating system, make the MacBook Neo a strong proposition in the budget laptop category.

Apple seems to have taken note of the market's needs and is offering a solution that can directly compete with Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops, which have dominated the affordable laptop. This strategy could help Apple expand its market share and attract new users who might not have previously considered investing in a MacBook.

Overall, the MacBook Neo seems to be a smart move by Apple to relaunch the affordable MacBook category, offering an attractive option for those looking for a powerful yet affordable laptop.
