A new add-on program for Firefox was released by the Mozilla foundation, which gives anyone browsing the World Wide Web with the help of this browser the ability to see who is tracking their online habits.
The program is called Lightbeam and displays in a graph which of the sites visited by the user are utilized, among other things, by online marketing and advertising companies, installing data files («cookies») on the user's computer to record their online behavior.
The creation of Lightbeam represents a «milestone» for Mozilla, in its effort to provide greater transparency in the way that «targeted advertising» becomes reality on the internet. The foundation's officials are quick to emphasize that they are not opposed to the use of cookies for commercial purposes, while noting that the user should know which companies and exactly how they record his online habits.
The program comes to replace Collusion, a similar tool that Mozilla had developed experimentally since the spring of 2012. The new tool is more refined and has more capabilities, allowing, for example, anyone who wishes to send the related information anonymously to Mozilla, so that a corresponding database can be created.
