Net Applications' desktop operating system usage statistics for September show Windows 8 exceeding 8% share , but Windows 7 strengthening its position.
Windows 8 gained 0.61% share in September to 8.02%, while Windows 7 also rose and now has a share of 46.43%.
Since its launch last October, Windows 8 saw its biggest percentage increase in August at 2.01% and its lowest in July, at just 0.30% .
The gains of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are due to the decline of Windows Vista by 0.13% (they are at 3.98%) and Windows XP, which with a decline of 2.25% now has a share of 31.41%.
Windows' overall share fell 0.36 percentage points to 90.83%. OS X gained 0.25 percentage points to 7.53%, while Linux gained 0.12 percentage points to 1.64%.
The data comes from Net Applications ' monthly survey and is based on visits from 160 million unique users to 40,000 websites worldwide.
