The gigabit trend is spreading globally and we in Greece are still living in caves, it seems. The company Free in France offers 1 Gbps fiber optic connection at the reasonable price of €35 ($47.41). And Google offers 1 Gbps internet connection in Austin, Texas also at a reasonable price for Fiber subscribers.
The 1 Gbps connection in France only comes with 200 Mbps upload, but no matter how we do it, it's much better than what the competition offers in this country, and pretty much everywhere else in the world. And let's not forget that this service costs 35 euros per month. At the same time as the service arrives, all VDSL subscribers will be upgraded to a 100 Mbps connection.
In the US, AT&T, having realized the competition in the market and especially from "Google Fiber", is launching its own gigabit connection, and may be the first to go live before Google, where its Fiber connection is supposed to become available in Austin, Texas in mid-2014.
AT&T's announcement reads: "AT&T today announced that it has begun deploying a 100 percent fiber broadband Internet network in Austin, Texas that will deliver speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second. AT&T plans to launch AT&T U-verse with GigaPower, the city's fastest Internet available to consumers, along with the most advanced TV services, in December.".
We are wondering here how much we pay per month for a poor ADSL of 24 Mbps download/1 Mbps upload – and if our line can handle that speed – and yes, we still live in caves with bears.
