Google is on a mission to integrate genetic artificial intelligence (AI) into many of its apps and services, and Gmail is no exception. The company already offers AI tools like writing assistance and summaries, and now it’s putting the latter feature on the map. As it revealed in its Workspace, AI-generated summaries will now automatically appear at the top of certain emails in Gmail for Android and iOS.

Previously, the user had to tap the “create summary” button in the app to generate a summary. Now, these summaries will automatically appear in emails where they are deemed useful – for example, in long message threads or conversations with many replies.

Google says the feature is available starting today in English, though it may take up to 15 days for it to appear for all users. The company adds that you can still manually enable AI-generated summaries by tapping the “summary of this email” button. This is useful in cases where automatic summarization isn’t enabled for a particular message or conversation thread.
While automatic summaries are expected to be useful for many, due to the erratic nature of genetic AI, it’s a good idea to read the entire email—especially when it comes to important conversations. Don’t care about these summaries? You can turn them off by disabling the Gemini integration in Gmail, but doing so also loses other Gemini features (like the Gemini chatbot).
