Someone just released a PS3 emulator for Android

Despite significant improvements in PS3 emulation via RPCS3 , Android users have been left out. The developer has clearly stated that it has no plans to create an Android version , leaving the only solution to emulate PS3 on Android via tools like Winlator . However, there is now a new, native PS3 emulator for Android, called aPS3e , that is coming to change that.

Before we go any further, an important disclaimer: It's not clear who the creator is or where this particular project comes from, which may cause some concern. If you decide to download and try it, you do so entirely at your own risk. All we know is that its creator is a Chinese programmer with the pseudonym Aenu, who is described as someone who "did not complete nine years of compulsory education, is unemployed, and lives a life of idleness in the countryside."

Currently, the PS3 emulator for Android is pretty basic, featuring a simple menu that only includes your game library. Compatibility also remains extremely limited, as none of the games tested by Android Authority on modern top-of-the-line smartphones were able to launch.

Other users on Reddit have managed to run lightweight games like Terraria and Limbo. However, performance is still inferior compared to RPCS3 on Winlator. Additionally, the L3 and R3 buttons seem to be manually set for some reason. Unfortunately, controller support is not yet available.

The app requires Android 7 or later, as well as Vulkan. You will also need to provide your own ROMs and corresponding firmware. The emulator was available for a while on Github, but has since been removed. For now, it can only be downloaded from a Chinese central server.

Regardless of where this leads, it's really encouraging to see PS3 emulation on Android making progress after years of stagnation. Most developers are focusing on two-tier emulation solutions via Windows or Linux containers, a process that's clearly more demanding than developing a native app like aPS3e. However, for now, it's best to treat it as a work in progress.
