A cybersecurity enthusiast has identified the longest and most complex passwords ever used by analyzing an extensive dataset of 31 million possible WPA WiFi passwords.

WiFi passwords

Typically, the length and complexity of a password directly affect its security. While different character sets deter attacks, longer passwords exponentially increase the time required for brute force.

According to cybersecurity experts , WPA2 passwords should ideally be at least 20 characters long to effectively resist modern hacking techniques .

This study not only highlights the creativity behind password selection, but also highlights the critical importance of adopting strong practices to enhance cybersecurity.

Researcher Jason Jacobs tapped the Top31Million-probable-WPA.txt, an extensive and comprehensive collection of WiFi passwords, ranging in length from 8 to 40 characters. These passwords are specifically designed for routers protected with WPA/WPA2 encryption. With over 30,965,071 entries, the dataset offers a wealth of material for analysis.

To detect the longest and most complex passwords, a custom Python. The script evaluated the passwords based on a Complexity Score, which was calculated using specific criteria.

Character Variety Bonus:

  • Capital letters: +5 points.
  • Lowercase letters: +5 points.
  • Numbers: +5 points.
  • Special characters: +7 points.
  • Mixing bonus: +3 points for each mixed type (up to +12).

Penalties:

  • Repeating patterns: -3 points per occurrence.
  • Minimum score: 1 point.

After editing, the password “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” topped the list as the longest WiFi password. At 34 characters, it shows how length alone can enhance security.

A creatively malicious JavaScript, the “>“, emerged as the most complex password. This choice highlights the intersection of cybersecurity and programming ingenuity.

WiFi passwords are essential for secure and controlled access to wireless networks. A well-chosen password should be strong, including a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. It is important to avoid simple or common passwords to protect the network from unauthorized access. It is also recommended to change the password regularly to enhance security.
