George Zhao, CEO of smartphone company Honor, has resigned for personal reasons.

"The company and the Board of Directors sincerely appreciate outstanding contributions during his tenure," the Chinese company said in the announcement regarding the executive's resignation.
Jian Li will succeed Zhao as Honor's CEO.

The personal reasons appear to be related to health issues, with Mr. George Zhao preferring to rest, recuperate, and spend more time with his family.
He said that his resignation from Honor is "the most difficult decision" he has ever made.
Honor smartphones
Honor split from China's Huawei in 2020 in an attempt to avoid US sanctions.
Under Zhao's leadership, Honor launched several smartphone models with an emphasis on international markets. George Zhao focused on high-end, including foldable smartphones. His goal was to make Honor a strong force in the global smartphone market and challenge established companies such as Samsung and Apple.
Honor's market share in China has grown from 9.8% in 2020 to over 15% in 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. Outside China, the share reached 2.3% in 2024, while in 2020 it was less than 1%. Recently, the company has also emphasized adding AI features to its devices.

It is believed that Honor will continue to devices and technology high-end under the new leadership. George Zhao's successor is tasked with expanding Honor's presence overseas, in a time of intense competition.
