The Passwords app will be an alternative to third-party apps like 1Password and LastPass, offering a simpler and more efficient way for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users to access their saved login information.

Apple already has a built-in password manager feature in its operating systems, although it's hidden in the Settings app and can be a bit difficult to find for those who aren't familiar with it. Apple is introducing new password features, such as saving logins and passwords, support for one-time passwords, and options to generate passwords directly in Safari.

Like the existing Passwords section in Settings , the new standalone “Passwords” app will be based on iCloud Keychain. This Apple feature syncs logins and passwords across all your Apple devices. The app will support all the features of the “Passwords” section and will be compatible with both Vision Pro and Windows computers .

The app includes login credentials and passwords for websites, Wi-Fi passwords, and Access Keys. This feature uses Face ID or Touch ID to log in to websites instead of a traditional password. The app's data can be auto-filled into websites and apps when users log in.

Apple's goal with the Passwords app is to encourage customers to use stronger passwords and avoid repeating them across multiple websites and services.

Apple will compete with long-standing third-party password services, such as 1Password, while also planning to allow customers to import their passwords from other services.
