The school district informed parents that it canceled classes Tuesday to allow time for its systems to come back up and running after were breached . Center Line Public Schools is set to reopen Wednesday.
Systems affected by the ransomware attack include all forms of communication – phones, security cameras, food service apps, Wi-Fi and all educational software, according to the school district.
“Ransomware essentially locks down systems and data, making it inaccessible to those who need it,” said David Derigiotis, who specializes in Internet security at Flow Specialty.
This is part of a worrying trend, he added.

The assistant superintendent of Center Line Public Schools said the district has been able to deal with the ransomware attack and expects most systems to be back up and running soon. However, parents remain concerned.

The cybercriminals who hacked the Centre Line Public Schools system are holding onto information to demand ransom.
“There are typically two parts to the extortion that we see. They’ll take the data, they’ll wipe it out of the system, and then you have to pay if you want that data to stay secure, so people don’t know it’s been stolen,” Derigiotis said. “And the second thing is, if you want to regain access to your systems, you have to be able to pay to get that usability.”
In their email to parents, Center Line Schools said they are working with police and cyber experts to figure out who is responsible for the ransomware attack.

What are the latest trends and developments in ransomware protection technology?
One of the latest trends in technology to protect against ransomware attacks, such as the one at Center Line Public Schools, is the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning. These technologies allow for the detection and analysis of suspicious activity in real time, offering a faster and more accurate response to potential attacks. The development and integration of Zero Trust solutions is also a significant development. This approach is based on the principle that no user or device should be automatically trusted, regardless of whether it is inside or outside the enterprise network. The use of blockchain technology for secure data storage and identity verification is another innovation that is gaining ground. Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR) solutions have evolved significantly, now offering faster and more reliable methods for recovering data after a ransomware attack.
