Meta: Now summarizes news articles directly instead of linking to external websites

Meta aims to summarize news instead of providing links to the websites that produce it, as Google does.

Meta

Unfortunately, this puts it in a powerful position to undermine news platforms. Recently, the social media stopped displaying news links.

This feature is similar to AI Overviews . Meta’s platforms are a major source of news and are used by a number of publications. While Meta doesn’t claim to be the primary source of news, it has previously served links to them. But that’s no longer the case.

However, that's not the only issue. The Washington Post tested the tool and found that it often generates sentences that are similar to those in articles, and in some cases copies them verbatim.

Meta displays websites, but places them in a section below the results called “View Sources.” This is true for news publications at least.

While this will be useful for most regular users, it is a direct blow to news publications and websites that rely on traffic from social media platforms. Unfortunately, the news industry will have to adapt to the new way of operating and artificial intelligence.

It is important that Meta and Google recognize their influence (although this is unlikely) and ensure that they do not plagiarize content from websites with AI bots.
