Mysterious malware targets gamers – Steals Bitcoin

A new malware campaign is reportedly targeting gamers, especially “cheaters,” and stealing credentials account

The account vx-underground said, in a post on X, that an unknown perpetrator is using malware to steal logins and other credentials from people using pay-to-cheat video game software.

The attacks have compromised more than 4.9 million accounts user at Activision Blizzard and the game store Battle.net . Accounts at the site Elite PVPers and cheat software markets PhantomOverlay and UnknownCheats are also affected .

“Affected users have started reporting that they are victims of crypto-draining – their Electrum BTC wallets have been emptied. We have no information on the amount of money that has been stolen,” vx-underground wrote.

In a post on Telegram on March 27, PhantomOverlay claimed that the number of hacked accounts “is inflated.” He added that the malware “appears to be a whole network of free/cheap software” originating from “some latency program, VPN , or something that millions of gamers use.”

An Activision Blizzard spokesperson told Cointelegraph that they had learned of some allegations regarding malware that would impact the gaming industry.

He said the company's servers "remain secure and breach-free" and recommended that users change passwords if they want to protect their accounts.

In its post, vx-underground wrote that PhantomOverlay “was alerted to fraudulent activity when user accounts began making unauthorized purchases.”
