Nadella wins CEO of the Year title from CNN Business, highlighting his leadership performance and influence in the industry.
The past year has stood out as the year of artificial intelligence, and no major company has followed the trend with as much enthusiasm as Microsoft.
In 2023, the company's CEO, Satya Nadella, made a multibillion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence. He integrated and commercialized AI tools, such as ChatGPT, into its product portfolio before its competitors. His ability to deal with crises with speed, composure, and logic impressed industry observers.

Under his leadership, Microsoft has emerged as an innovator, surpassing the Windows success that had been years in the making. Wall Street has also watched the company's rise, with its shares up 55% this year.
Accordingly, CNN Business staff named Nadella CEO of the Year, favoring him over other candidates such as Chase's Jamie Dimon, OpenAI's Sam Altman, and Nvidia's Jensen Huang.
“There’s no doubt that 2023 was the year of AI,” Nadella told CNN in an email. “Innovation is no longer just a concept; we’re experiencing real product creation, implementation, and profitability. But that innovation is only constructive if it empowers all of us in our careers, in our communities, in our countries.”
Since 2018, CNN Business staff has gathered at the end of each year to select a business person whose executive performance has stood out. This process can be subjective, as someone is selected based on criteria that evolve over time.
Maybe the company's stock outperformed its competitors. Maybe the CEO was discovered after an unfortunate product launch, or the company successfully weathered a damaging turning point that affected the course of human history (hello to Pfizer's 2021 CEO, Albert Bourla).

As Gil Luria, senior research fellow at wealth management firm DA Davidson, points out: “His ability to guide the ‘aircraft carrier’ that is Microsoft into this new era has been truly impressive.”
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is of Indian descent and has made a name for himself in artificial intelligence (AI). While working as an engineer since 1992, he served as Microsoft's chairman when the company faced challenges.
Nadella has reshaped Microsoft internally and focused on commercializing AI. After partnering with OpenAI and investing $13 billion, Microsoft has introduced products like Word and Excel with built-in AI, challenging competitors and encouraging a competitive race in the industry.
As more companies adopt OpenAI technologies like ChatGPT, Microsoft's cloud business is set to grow even more. Despite Satya Nadella's successful performance, he has been singled out for his handling of the events following Altman's unexpected firing from OpenAI.

Despite his long-standing relationship with OpenAI, Nadella learned of Altman's firing as it was announced, and Microsoft's stock price plummeted due to OpenAI's importance in its AI expansion plans. Nadella quickly offered Altman the role of head of a new AI research lab at Microsoft.
At the same time, Microsoft reports strong growth in Azure, as more companies integrate technologies like ChatGPT.
Satya Nadella effectively handled the complex situation that arose with Altman's dismissal from OpenAI. He contacted members of the OpenAI board of directors and managed to reach an agreement that was considered favorable to Microsoft's interests. He proved capable of turning the situation around, securing Altman's return to OpenAI with a new board.

Nadella's negotiating and interpersonal skills are also highlighted. Luria points out that Nadella demonstrated communication skills that are not common to all CEOs, as he managed to convince stakeholders to adopt a solution that serves Microsoft's interests.
Finally, Microsoft reportedly benefited from acquiring the most important part of OpenAI – its ambitious talent. By Monday, Microsoft was in better financial shape, with its stock reaching an all-time high.
