Google’s artificial intelligence-powered Search Generative Experience (SGE) is getting a major new feature: it will be able to summarize articles you read online, according to a Google blog post. SGE can already summarize search results for you so you don’t have to scroll endlessly to find what you’re looking for, and this new feature is designed to take that a step further, helping you after you’ve actually clicked on a link.

You probably won't see this feature right away, which Google calls "SGE while browsing.".
Google says it’s a new feature that’s starting to roll out Tuesday as “an early experiment” in its Search Labs . (You’ll have access to it if you’ve already opted into SGE, but if you haven’t, you can opt into the feature yourself.) It’ll be available first in the Google app on Android and iOS, and the company will bring it to the Chrome browser on desktop “in the coming days.”

If you access the app on mobile, Google will pull up a set of AI-after you tap an icon at the bottom of the screen. The feature is designed to work “only on articles that are freely available to the public online” — the company says it won’t work with sites that publishers designate as paywalled.
Google is making a slew of other improvements to SGE. In SGE results for a search query about topics like science, economics, and history, the company says you'll be able to hover over certain words to get definitions or charts about a topic. Google is also making SGE's summaries of programming information easier to understand.
Google announced SGE at Google I/O in May and has been refining it over the months since. Google is pleased with its progress. On the company’s latest call , CEO Sundar Pichai said that user feedback “has been very positive so far” and that “over time this is just going to be the way Search works.”
