Microsoft has been putting a lot of effort into integrating Bing Chat into the Edge browser, but there's another feature that's not as visible: a secret Split-Screen mode.
The latest stable versions of Microsoft Edge have an experimental feature flag for “Microsoft Edge Split Screen.” It adds a split button to the main toolbar, which displays a grid of your tabs when clicked. Selecting a tab will move the current tab to the side of your screen, while the selected one will take up the other half.
You can easily resize each side to your desired preference by dragging the center bar. Tabs that are organized into two halves have a blue line on their tab bars. The address bar, however, is still in testing and may appear buggy at times – that's completely normal! However, it is also divided into two parts, just like other features.
If you already have Windows or are using a Linux desktop that supports split or grid window layouts, there’s not much to get excited about. But wait! There’s a unique feature here – you can easily snap windows to their own tabs, drag them to either side of the screen, and quickly switch between them as needed. If you’re looking for the perfect link but want to avoid going back and forth or opening multiple tabs, then if you hover your mouse over a split tab (or right-click on a page), an option will appear that lets you open links from one side of the page to the other – how handy! This feature makes it easier for browsers who don’t want to deal with a lot of details when searching for what they need.
You can test the feature by opening edge://flags/#edge-split-screen, clicking 'Enabled' in the highlighted drop-down menu, and restarting the browser when prompted. It's unclear when or if Microsoft will make it available to everyone.
