Google has decided to suspend Pinduoduo, a Chinese budget shopping app, from the Play Store after the company discovered malware in some versions of the app.
On Tuesday, Google released a statement warning users about the presence of malware in certain versions of the app. Those versions are no longer available on the Play Store.
"We have suspended the Play version of the app for security reasons while we continue our investigation," a Google spokesperson said.

To ensure user safety, Google Play Protect has been enabled on everyone to scan apps installed on phones to detect any harmful behavior associated with these alleged malicious apps.
“The forced activation of Google Play Protect has been done to block attempts to install these detected malicious apps. Users who have downloaded malicious versions of the app to devices are being warned and asked to uninstall the app,” the spokesperson said.
On Tuesday morning, Pinduoduo told CNN that it was notified by Google Play of a temporary suspension of the app, as the current version “does not comply with its policy.”

“We are contacting Google for more information. They told us that there are many other apps that have also been suspended,” a Pinduoduo spokesperson said.
The move could negatively impact the Chinese company behind the app, especially at a time when US lawmakers have accused Chinese-owned apps like TikTokof posing a national security. Pinduoduo is heavily used in China, and it is rare for Google to freeze downloads of such a major app.
Malware refers to any software designed to steal data or compromise and destroy devices (computers and mobile devices) and networks. Often, malicious actors attempt to embed malicious software within seemingly legitimate applications to infiltrate multiple users' devices and gain access to important information on a user's phone.

Pinduoduo is one of China's most popular e-commerce platforms, with around 900 million users. This means that many users who had the malicious versions of the app installed have been affected.
