KB5020030: Preview update for Windows 10 released

Microsoft has released the KB5020030 Preview cumulative update, for all versions of Windows 10 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2.

The new update brings you ten bug fixes and improvements, including fixes for an issue with the Microsoft Store and an issue that causes Direct3D 9 (D3D9) to crash when using Microsoft Remote Desktop.

Update KB5020030 is part of Microsoft's monthly "C" updates for November 2022. It enables administrators to test fixes that will be released to all users with the December 2022 Patch Tuesday

However, non-security preview builds, such as KB5020030, are optional and do not come with security.

To install this update on a Windows device, open Settings, go to “Windows Update” and click “Check for Updates”.

If you want to install this update, you can do so manually by clicking 'Download and install'. (Note: The update will only be installed automatically on Windows Insider builds).

Windows 10 users can also download and install the preview update KB5020030 from the Microsoft Update Catalog (and this must be done manually). The Microsoft Update Catalog was created by Microsoft and provides a list of updates for companiesto distribute over the network.

What's new in this preview update?

As we said above, the new Windows 10 update KB5020030 includes ten improvements or fixes. The three most important ones are listed below:

  • The search box now appears by default on the taskbar when the taskbar is at the top of your screen or when you enable small taskbar button mode. You can use the search box to discover information and search your computer and the web directly from your taskbar. To configure how search appears, right-click the taskbar on your main screen and hover over Search.
  • Addresses some update failures for the Microsoft Store.
  • Addresses an issue affecting some printers.

Microsoft also announced that update KB5020030 is the last preview update of 2022.

The company explained that due to reduced operations during the holidays and the upcoming new year, there will be no more non-security preview releases for December 2022.

“There will be a monthly security release (known as build “B”) for December 2022. Regular monthly servicing for builds B and C will resume in January 2023“.
