New emoji are coming to your messaging app soon, including a “high-five” emoji that’s sure to get a lot of use. Its real name is “pushing hand,” and it’s one of several new emojis on the Emojipedia that have been submitted for approval to the Unicode Consortium, an organization responsible for global emoji standards and releases.

In addition to the “high-five,” other new emoji include a shaking face, pink, blue, and gray hearts, a Khanda (which is the symbol of the Sikh faith), the Wi-Fi (wireless) icon, a hair comb, a donkey, jellyfish, and more. There’s also a preview of other emoji, including a crow, goose, a pea pod, a feather, a flute, a blackbird, ginger, hyacinth, and a folding hand fan.

Unicode is expected to give final approval for Emoji 15.0 in September. Once that happens, the new selected emoji will be sent to major operating system platforms and distributed via software updates during 2022-2023.
Keith Broni, the editor-in-chief of Emojipedia, said in a blog that: “While some may not receive approval, most that are submitted for approval are confirmed.” With World Emoji Day coming up this Sunday, Emojipedia says emoji usage on Twitter is at an all-time high. 22% of tweets sent this month have included at least one emoji. That’s up from 20.59% of tweets containing an emoji last year and 20.15% that featured an emoji two years ago.

Broni made it clear that the new emojis are previews, so changes may be made.
When Emoji 15.0 is released, the design of each emoji may be different from how it looks today. Designs also change between vendors. It’s also worth noting that the “golden age” of emoji may be a thing of the past. In January 2020, 117 new emoji were approved for 13.0, peaking at 217 in September 2020 for 13.1. In September 2021, 112 new emoji were greenlit for 14.0, while this September, Emoji 15.0 is estimated to bring just 31 new emoji.
