Google is finally sharing more about how it will deliver Stadia game streaming to other companies. The company used the Google for Games Developer Summit to detail Immersive Stream for Games, the “extended” Stadia platform for third parties. The offering allows companies to offer cloud gaming to a wide range of players — not just subscribers.

As with Stadia itself, a “Click to Play Trials” feature will let players try out full titles without an account. You’ll know if you like a game without having to download it. You can also browse a game store without an account. Similarly, Google wants to simplify porting games to the platform through a “Low Change Porting” effort that will reduce the work required to make games streaming-friendly.

It may take a while for all of these features to reach early adopters of Immersive Stream. The open-source model of the showcase is expected in the “coming weeks,” with testing coming sometime in 2022. The easier porting is still in testing. However, AT&T has already used the platform’s early version to offer Batman: Arkham Knight (in October), and is also touting an upcoming second game that will finally let you stream on mobile, not just desktop.

The expansion to outside companies was largely expected. It's no secret that Google struggled to develop Stadia and shut down its internal game studios in early 2021. Immersive Stream gives the company a way to capitalize on Stadia's technology and could fend off its competitors.
