Misinformation and rumors are a big issue in today’s world. The more outlandish a rumor is, the greater its chances of spreading like wildfire and having a negative impact on society. To combat this issue, major messaging and social media platforms have added various restrictions. In 2019, WhatsApp banned users from sharing frequently forwarded messages to more than five conversations at once. Now, the Facebook-owned messaging service is looking to limit the forwarding of all messages to a single group conversation.

Currently, WhatsApp has this restriction for viral or frequently forwarded messages. Once a message is shared more than four times, it is marked as frequently forwarded — marked with a double arrow and a Forwarded tag at the top. However, after the change in the beta program, it seems that the restriction will soon be applied to regular messages as well. As spotted by WABetaInfo in version 2.22.7.2 of the WhatsApp beta for Android, users are seeing a warning — “Forwarded messages can only be sent to one group chat” — whenever they try to forward a regular message to more than one group chat.

It's unclear why WhatsApp is making this change, but it's likely to further limit the spread of misinformation and rumors on its platform. The restriction won't allow a conversation to be forwarded to more than one group at a time — users will have to share the message individually to each group. This should be enough of a deterrent to reduce the spread of misinformation.
