Osom OV1 released: What are its features?

Osom announced the details for its new OV1 phone. In the company's effort to compete with the giants of Apple, Google and Samsung, the OV1 will have a casing made of stainless steel and titanium, a ceramic back, Corning Victus cover glass and a Qualcomm processor.

Specifically, stainless steel was used for the phone's frame, while titanium was used for the power and volume buttons, as well as the ring around the camera bump, according to Android Police. The new phone is expected to be quite heavy, as it will be larger than the Essential Phone, which had thin bezels and a 5.7-inch display. The device will be available in matte white and matte black, but the company said there will be "some surprises" in terms of colors.

Osom founder and CEO Jason Keats said that the new device’s resemblance to the Essential Phone was not intentional and was simply due to the fact that it was created by the same team of engineers and designers. However, the similarity doesn’t limit the uniqueness of the phone. The materials are still relatively unusual. Arguably, Apple is perhaps closer with its stainless steel sides and the “ceramic shield” of the iPhone 13 Pro, but the difference between the iPhone and an OV1 would be obvious to most users.

The new Osom OV1 device was supposed to be announced this week, but its creators decided to postpone it to upgrade its processor. According to TechCrunch, the new phone will have a Snapdragon 8. Qualcomm recently changed the name of the chips to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, although it is unlikely that this particular chip will be used as the company declined to provide further information.

H Osom also reports that the phone will have “all‑day” battery life and will feature an extremely wide band or UWB, which is the same technology used by other manufacturers such as Apple, Google and Samsung for things like precision location tracking and digital car keys. Keats did not specify exactly what purpose they have placed a radio in the device, but said the company has some interesting things in the works that will be announced later. Additionally, the new phone will have space for two SIM cards as the company deliberately chose not to use an eSIM to avoid being tied to specific providers.

At the same time, the company, while acknowledging the camera flaws on the Essential, says it wants the OV1 to offer a truly premium photography experience. Design-wise, the OV1 has the camera bump that holds the two rear cameras that have a resolution of 48 and 12 megapixels while the front camera will have 16MP. Due to the importance of software in cameras, it is difficult to assume how these specifications will translate to the image.

Finally, there is the USB-C to C cable that comes with the new device in the box. Also, another important feature added by the company is the ability to use a switch that disconnects the data pins at the hardware level so that you can charge the phone on public outlets without worry. Unfortunately, the mechanical disconnection means that the cable operates at USB 2 speeds, i.e., 60 megabytes per second par’olo that the Osom OV1 port can support the much higher speeds of 625 MB/s of USB 3.2 Gen 1 when combined with a different cable.
