Similar to those being developed by Meta and Apple, Google's device uses outward-facing cameras to combine computer graphics with a real-world video feed, creating the mixed reality experience currently missing from AR glasses.

As reported by The Verge, the early prototype of Project Iris, which apparently looks like a pair of battery-powered ski goggles, uses a custom Google processor running Android. However, a job listing for a senior software engineer suggests that the company is developing a unique AR operating system.

Google's Augmented Reality OS team, led by recent recruit Mark Lucovsky, is looking for new members to help "develop next-generation technologies that change the way billions of users connect, explore, and interact with each other," the job description said.

Google entered the smart glasses arena in 2013 with the Google Glass optical glasses, a venture that ultimately failed. Competition from Meta and Apple seems to have pushed Google to re-enter the market.
