The Korean company will spend $17 billion on buildings, machinery and equipment. The chip factory will be Samsung's largest investment in the US to date, according to the company itself.

The plant significantly expands Samsung's presence in Texas, which is currently limited to a chip factory in Austin. Samsung's new facility will be dedicated to manufacturing chips that will be used in a variety of areas, including mobile, 5G, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.

“With greater production capacity, we will be able to better serve our customers’ needs and contribute to the stability of the global chip supply chain,” a company executive said.

Samsung plans to begin construction on the 5 million square foot facility in the first half of 2022, with hopes of putting the plant into operation in the second half of 2024.The chip is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs and thousands of other related jobs when it is fully operational. Samsung also plans to establish a Samsung Skills Center for the Taylor Independent School District, which will provide skills development, internships and job opportunities for local students.

Taylor allegedly offered tax incentives to attract Samsung.

“In addition to our partners in Texas, we are grateful to the Biden administration for creating an environment that supports companies like Samsung as we work to expand chip manufacturing in the U.S.,” the company said. “We also thank the administration and Congress for their support for rapidly enacting federal incentives for domestic chip production.”
