Frodo's journey to Mordor was long and terrible, and so will the journey in the next Lord of the Rings story. Filming for the first season of Amazon's highly detailed new TV series wrapped in New Zealand on Monday, and to celebrate, the company announced that the show will premiere on September 2, 2022.

The show will premiere in over 240 countries and territories around the world, with new episodes releasing weekly. Along with the announcement came a brand new image, which you can check out in full below. We don’t yet know who the person depicted is, but the architecture of the landscape has a distinct Rivendell vibe, meaning it was likely built by the elves. Perhaps this is Valinor, or more specifically, the city of Valmar. io9’s Lightice added, “ This is Tyrion, the city of the Noldor in the Undying Lands, and the image is set in the First Age, as the two trees glow in the background. ” Entertainment Weekly also confirmed that the image is from the first episode of the series, so it’s likely some kind of extended flashback to the making of what’s to come.

What we do know for sure is that the series will be set thousands of years before the events of Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The series takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, which started out rather peacefully, but turned out to be anything but peaceful, setting the stage for all the stories we've become familiar with thanks to Peter Jackson's films.
“The journey begins on September 2, 2022 with the premiere of The Lord of the Rings original series on Prime Video,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, in a press release. “I can’t express enough how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth! Our talented producers, actors, creators and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this unspeakable and breathtaking vision to life.”

The reality is, though, that we have to wait. And it's a long wait. But if the series is worthy of the huge investment Amazon has made in it, it will certainly be worth it.
