In the Shetland Islands, in the northernmost part of Scotland, Nova Innovation’s tidal wind turbines have been powering homes and businesses for more than five years. Now, Nova has installed a tidal-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging point on Shetland’s Yell Island – which Nova says is the first to be launched in the UK.
The charging point is located at Cullivoe Harbour, in the north of the island, near where Nova's turbines are installed. It's not a fast charger, but it's still very useful for electric vehicles (EVs) since Yell is only 83 square miles.

The Shetland Islands are not connected to the UK’s main electricity grid. Improving supply has already led to major projects in both renewables – through Nova’s tidal turbines and other systems – and grid storage to allow the islands to better balance their usage. Nova began working on tidal power in Shetland in 2016, installing three 100kW turbines, so while the eVolt charger installed at Yell is not a fast charger, this is not due to supply constraints.

Nova’s project received funding from Transport Scotland for the project. ICE vehicles are responsible for around a fifth of all carbon emissions in the UK. The Scottish Government has banned the sale of new ICE cars by 2032, accelerating the need to develop new sources of clean energy in motor vehicles.
