Telegram is rolling out a new update to its iOS and Android apps that brings features like auto-delete messages, chat widgets, and expiring invite links. The company shared this information with the public earlier this week. Telegram explains that the auto-delete feature with a timer will automatically delete messages either 24 hours or seven days after they’re sent.
Auto-delete only applies to messages sent after the timer is set – previous messages will still remain in the chat history . The countdown starts from the moment the message is sent, not from the moment it is read. To enable the timer on Android, tap more (represented by three vertical lines) > Clear History > Choose the duration. Telegram users on iPhone should long-press on a message, then tap Select > Clear Chat (top left) > Enable Auto-Delete. Specifically, Telegram has introduced a new widget for iOS that includes a shortcut to your favorite or recent chats. It has also released a chat widget that shows a preview of recent messages. The company explains: “On Android, chats and messages in the widget will always be up to date. On iOS, widgets will receive new data occasionally – this is due to system limitations . ”
With the latest version of Telegram, users will be able to send invite links to users that will expire after a set amount of time – similar to messages that will be automatically deleted . Users can also see who joined using the invite link to learn where new members are coming from or which format was most effective for growth. To view and manage invite links, tap to open your group or channel profile at Profile > Edit > Invite Links.
Other features include new animated emoji in any chat. The company has also improved its reporting system, where users can add a comment informing the company about the problem they are having. The ability to import chats from WhatsApp that Telegram introduced last month has also been improved. In addition, Telegram groups that are approaching the 200,000 member limit can now be converted into Broadcast Groups with unlimited members.
