Here's an announcement for Siri users: You'll finally be able to deselect Apple Music and set Spotify or another third-party music streaming service as your default. The new feature is part of the iOS 14.5 public beta and was first discovered by Reddit users. So it's not currently available to all users.
If you've downloaded any of the betas on your iPhone, you'll have the opportunity to change your default music service the first time you ask Siri to play a song.
Having downloaded the public beta of iOS 14.5, we immediately tried out the feature. Instead of saying “Siri, play Mumford & Sons on Spotify,” we said “Siri, play Mumford & Sons.”
From there, Siri displayed the following three streaming services as options: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Towards the bottom of the screen, it asked: “Which app would you like to use?”
Once we selected Spotify, it asked for permission to access our Spotify data. After we tapped “Yes,” it started playing a song from the app. Now, Siri automatically plays music from Spotify without us having to do any additional setup.
Of course, some users complained that the whole process did not work as it seems that Siri chooses the Apple Music service by default.
The thread creator, matejamm1, found that the feature doesn't work very smoothly:
"The functionality is a bit inconsistent, like many things involving Siri. Once I asked it to play 'Blue Hotel', it offered to let me choose the service I wanted, then I dismissed Spotify and asked it to play the song again and it played directly through Apple Music, and then the third time I asked it, it asked me to access my Pocket Casts, which is a podcast app and apparently doesn't contain any songs."
From the screenshots above, you can see that the feature also brought some errors to us, as it displayed Apple Podcasts as an option (which is, a podcast app).
It's clear that Apple needs to make some fixes before the feature is officially released in the final version of iOS 14.5.
