Cybercriminals have stolen nude photos and videos of hundreds of famous female athletes and posted them online.
The attack took place at the same time as hackers hit Manchester United. The leak of the nude photos brings to mind a similar incident (Fappening) that took place in 2014 and exposed nude photos of celebrities online.
According to the data, the hackers leaked, among other things, nude photos stolen from the phones of four British athletes, as part of an attack that has affected hundreds of other sports stars.
The athletes are trying to control the situation and remove the nude photos and videos, but it is quite difficult.
“ The hack, which became known this week, has caused panic. One of the leading sports agencies has advised its clients to take extra steps to protect their personal data ,” The Times reported .
The hackers managed to steal 100 photos from a single athlete and more than 30 photos and videos from another.
Athletes are doing everything they can to remove their photos from the dark net.
"It's really hard to know what to do next," said a spokesman for one of them. "The people who do this are sick. We've seen some very unpleasant cases, even people being blackmailed for stolen material."
"It could take years to remove nude photos from the Internet," he said.
A spokesperson for the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said: “The access and subsequent leakage of data people’s,” and added that all people should be very careful and protect their online accounts and devices.
One of the most important measures someone can take to avoid such breachesis implementing two-factor authentication.
“The NCSC recommends that individuals enable two-factor authentication, where available,” the NCSC spokesperson continued. The spokesperson also stressed the importance of a strong and unique password.
