Gmail users: New security alerts are coming

In the coming weeks, Google will begin rolling out new security alerts for critical issues affecting individual Google accounts, with the alert appearing in the Google app currently in use.

Most importantly, recipients of Google's security alerts — which it pushes to users when it detects their account may have been compromised — don't need to check their email or phone system notifications for the warning.

Instead, the notification will appear right in the Google app they are using, potentially reducing the time it takes for them to respond and secure account .

The new system for delivering critical security alerts has a better chance of reaching users since they will be paying attention to only one of Google's apps.

Users should see an alert next to their avatar in the Gmail app search bar. Clicking on the alert takes them to a “Critical security alert” page with a “Check activity” button that leads to an explanation of why Google issued the alert.

The new delivery could be extremely valuable if it eventually works with Google apps we use frequently, like YouTube, Google Maps, Google Maps, or Waze.

According to Google, the new in-app security notifications for Google apps are “spoofing-resistant.”.

Google plans to roll out the feature in limited numbers in the coming weeks and expand availability early next year. The company announced the new feature as part of its contribution to National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Google's Safe Browsing system for Chrome and other browsers protects four billion devices, while Google blocks over 100 million phishing per day. Google Play Protect, the built-in malware protection system for Android, scans over 100 billion apps every day.

Google is also introducing a new privacy control to prevent interactions with Google Assistant from being saved to a Google account. A new “Guest mode” can be activated with a voice command that prevents anything the user says to the Assistant from being saved to their account.

This could be useful when you interact with Google Home and Nest smart speakers and don't want that information to be stored in their account.

The one downside to Guest Mode is that Google Assistant isn't personalized when it's active. The feature builds on Google Assistant's privacy controls introduced last year that let users delete recent Assistant activity from a Google account with voice commands , like "Hey Google, delete the last thing I said to you" or "Hey Google, delete everything I said last week."
