Beauty Industry: Technology is Driving Its Future

China Beauty Expo (CBE), the world's leading beauty exhibition, is always at the forefront of the development of the Beauty Industry. This year, in cooperation with “YAT” and “data data.ai”, using data from the China Beauty Expo and online cosmetics, the “China Meiyi Science and Technology White Paper” was released, assessing the impact of technology on consumer behavior and the type of cutting-edge technology incorporated into beauty products. The following is a brief excerpt from the white paper.

With the development of skin biology, bio-gene and nanotechnology, there is a lot of room for the creation of innovative ingredients in the cosmetics sector. Breakthroughs at the ingredient level are difficult, but the development of new materials could lead to innovation for an entire category of beauty products. The innovation of raw materials is expected to give players in the beauty industry the opportunity to reshape/reorganize. According to patent applications , investments and financing in the beauty sector, skin microecology technology, biological fermentation technology and cell extraction will be the focus of the industry.

Technology helps collect user data and make business decisions

The online shopping of cosmetics is now almost inevitable. During the COVID-19, the volume of in-person sales shrank. Now, many beauty companies are developing online applications based on AI and VR, trying to create a deep connection with consumers. Beauty companies are aiming for the following:

  • Consumers can have a “diagnosis” for their skin without having to visit a physical store.
  • Companies want to collect data on users' skin characteristics and habits. Their goal is to develop products based on data analysis.
  • When consumers use an online beauty app, their long-term usage habits will be recorded. This increases the interaction between the beauty company and the consumer, thus increasing brand loyalty.

Application of technology in the “Beauty Industry”“

  • Kao uses AI technology to help consumers analyze their skin needs and provides them with targeted skin management/treatment.
  • Unilever's SAL (Skin Advisor Live) allows users to upload selfies. The app analyzes the user's skin with built-in diagnostic technology and recommends the right products for them .
  • Sephora has developed a smart phone app for consumers to try on makeup products, such as lipstick and eyeshadow.
  • Tencent combines 3D imaging technology and AI to help users discover the best suitable products for them.
  • Alibaba's program simulates a test scenario for the consumer, which monitors their skin condition at all times and provides them with professional skin care suggestions.
