IP firm sues Spotify over stolen patents from Yahoo

Spotify is being sued by an IP company for alleged infringement of its patents. Excalibur IP filed a lawsuit before the Delaware Court on Monday (January 28). The complaint states that Spotify infringes the rights of four patents that belonged to Yahoo. Excalibur IP obtained the rights to represent over 2,000 patents that belong to Yahoo! in 2016.

The four patents cited in Spotify's complaint refer to software that processes digital fingerprints of audio files as well as tailoring broadcasts based on listener preference.

One of the Yahoo patents mentioned concerns tools that create digital objects based on a user's prior behavior.

A section of Excalibur's documentation states: “Spotify implements a method that involves defining an initial community of members by filtering a preference data store for content data stream, where the said data stream content includes data stream elements since the members of the initial community have at least one stored preference.”

“For example, to create personalized playlists (e.g., Discover Weekly, Daily Mix, Radar Release, Spοtify Radio, etc.), Spotify defines an initial community of members, filtering a preference storage space for data stream content once you have saved at least one preference.”

Another part of the lawsuit accuses Spotify of infringing on the streaming. We have no information on Spotify's response but we expect more.
