Recently, Alexander Tratsevskiy, lead developer of Calculate Linux, announced the release of the new version of the operating system – Calculate Linux 20.6. The main purpose of the new version is to optimize the operating system, as well as update its applications.
Traditionally, Calculate Linux (CL) 20.6 comes in different distributions, in order to meet the needs of each user. The latest version, like the previous ones, includes the Calculate Linux Desktop (CLD), Calculate Directory Server (CDS), Scratch (CLS), and Calculate Scratch Server (CSS) distributions. In addition, the Desktop distribution comes with 5 different environments: KDE, Cinnamon, LXQT, MATE, and Xfce.
Each of the Calculate Linux distributions comes with improvements to the corresponding system, while also bringing many updated applications. Some of these applications are KDE applications 19.12.2, GIMP 2.10.18, Chromium 83.0.4103.106, Claws Mail 3.17.5, Kernel 5.4.45 and LibreOffice 6.4.3.2.
For example, in CL 20.06, the Chromium Browser comes with the uBlock Origin extension pre-installed, which is responsible for content filtering. In addition, the updated chromium contains the Passman and FreedomMarks extensions, which support NextCloud.

Another change in CL 20.06 is the new sound system. From now on, the operating system will use PulseAudio as the default sound system. However, the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALAS) is still there, and users can use it when they want.
Along with the above changes, the latest version also has better Zram performance (which replaces the classic Swap partition). In addition, the time required for boot-up has been significantly reduced.
Below is a list of some bug fixes in Calculate Linux 20.6:
- Improved the issue with local overlay configuration.
- Improved login in the MATE environment.
- Better PXE installation and boot.
- Pyopenssl has been updated.
- Improved GPU discovery.
- Problems with installing nvidia drivers.
- Fixed the bug in Cl-console-gui.
- Access to locked account files has been removed.
How to install the operating system:
If you are using Calculate Linux, you can upgrade your system directly to version 20.6. However, if you wish to install the operating system, you can download the installation files, and then create a bootable USB.
