The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), is one of the largest reviews published to date of patients infected with COVID -19 and hospitalized in the United States . Specifically, the researchers examined the outcomes of patients admitted between March 1 and April 4 at 12 hospitals in New York City and Long Island that are part of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (Northwell Health) .
The mortality rate was 21% among 2,634 patients, but rose to 88% for those who were intubated. In addition, only 3% of intubated patients over 65 survived, compared with 24% in the 18-to-65 age group, according to the study by Northwell Health, the largest health system in New York. The mortality rate was also higher among men than women.
The mortality rate reported in the study may not be fully representative of the real data. This is because the study only included patients who died or were discharged. Instead, it did not include patients who were still being treated in hospitals. Furthermore, the results represent only 2,634 of the 5,700 patients who were admitted during the study period. The Northwell Health researchers who participated in the study said they knew in which cases patients needed ventilators, but they could not reach any clear conclusion about the best way to use ventilators in patients with COVID-19. So they only report some observations in their study, said Karina Davidson, senior vice president of research at Northwell Health.
