Battery life has always been a problem in technology. While there are incredibly powerful laptops, the weak point has always been that the battery lasts a few hours. That's what Intel thought and proposed a solution.
At Computex 2018, the company introduced its new Low Power Display technology, a combination of a special LCD screen and smart power management.
We're talking about a 13-inch Sharp/Innolux display that consumes only 1 Watt, half of what today's monitors consume. This technology could increase battery life by four to eight hours, depending on usage. The displays could offer about 20 hours of battery life for video playback. That could mean a 28-hour battery life for our laptops.
Intel, in demonstrating the new technology, increased battery life to over 25 hours without affecting performance. But it didn't provide any more information, so it's unclear where the percentage of battery life it's getting from: how much from the new display and how much from improved power management.
It's also worth noting that while long video playback is impressive, video is not the most reliable way to measure real-world battery life these days. Finally, we'll have to assume that all of this would require an Intel graphics chip instead of a different one from a different company.
But either way, a 25% increase in battery life is an impressive feat, and a good starting point for the technologies that will come our way in the coming years.
