The Matrix is back! Nearly 16 years after the last film in the series, Warner Bros. has confirmed that a fourth Matrix film is in the works. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will star. Only one of the Wachowski sisters (Lana) will be involved, who will also direct, write and co-produce the film.

Many sources claim that production will begin in early 2020.
But why is the series coming back to the screen, besides the money, of course? Lana Wachowski has argued that many of the issues addressed in the Matrix trilogy are timely… and she's probably right. Simulated worlds and artificial intelligence are playing increasingly important roles in society. There have already been several questions raised about reality and what it means to be human, and The Matrix could continue that conversation.

The biggest question we're all wondering (aside from whether or not the movie will be any good) is how it can build on the previous three films. There's a basic premise - there were hints that Neo could return after making peace with the machines - but there are a lot of unanswered questions. What breaks the truce (which continued in Monolith's The Matrix Online)? How does Trinity return? Whatever the answers, it's clear that a fourth Matrix film could easily be a major success given Keanu's popularity and the series' enduring influence on philosophy and pop culture.
