According to reports, Twitter has decided to exercise control from now on over app developers. Specifically, over those that use data from Twitter. The social networking platform made this decision in order to ensure that it is paid for the information it provides.
The new measure will be implemented from June 19. Developers who will use data more than 100,000 times a day will have to submit their applications to Twitter for the necessary review.
“The goal is to ensure that our platform remains secure, to promote the privacy and security of our users, and to provide a level playing field,” Yoel Roth, the site’s chief executive, said on Tuesday.
With the new data, if developers do not obey the new rules or violate Twitter's policies, they will be removed from the platform.
“We’re fundamentally different from other platforms that have APIs, in that almost everything that happens on our service is public,” Roth explained. From now on, Twitter’s partnership with developers will change. If someone wants to leverage platform data to serve customers or for anything else, they’ll have to pay.
A commercial agreement will also need to be made, and the amount developers will be charged will depend on how much they use the platform. However, Twitter has not yet revealed the prices it will offer.
Some developers, depending on the use of the platform, may be given free access to the API, as is the case now.
In the second half of 2018, the platform suspended a large number of applications. With this move, it wanted to emphasize to developers and in general that it will not let anyone jeopardize its ecosystem.
