Sleep texting: We send messages, subconsciously, during sleep

We've heard about sleep walking and sleep eating, now it's time to learn about sleep texting. New research from Villanova University shows that young people are sending messages in their sleep, mostly subconscious thoughts, and they don't remember it the next morning. In other words, drunk texting wasn't enough, now we have sleep texting...

According to the study, a quarter of 372 university students “suffer” from sleep-texting. Sleep-texting is defined as “responding to or sending a text message while asleep” – it could happen when someone texts you and you respond unconsciously, even when you are practically asleep. The sound or vibration of your mobile phone wakes you up and you instinctively respond to the message. This action can happen once or more during sleep, negatively affecting the quality and duration of your sleep.

Sleep texting

It should be noted that most students had their cell phones - if not in bed - very close to them during the night. The most worrying part of the study is that most of those who wrote a message in their sleep did not remember sending it the next day.

"The majority of students did not remember whether they sent a message. The lack of memory is not surprising, as people who wake up after a nap lasting more than 10 minutes usually cannot remember the last few minutes before falling asleep," says Elizabeth B. Dowdell, lead author of the study.

And because there would certainly be jokes among the messages sent, we present to you some of them: “Lips I dripped it” “I legittt wish veggird were enough to fuelme” “It means Girls tonight. It I 10.”

The research found that poor sleep quality among college students is likely due to many different factors, not just their phones. Lack of sleep can increase stress levels and have many more adverse effects on your health.
