The gap between Chrome and Microsoft Edge is growing

It is no secret that Google Chrome is the most used browser on the desktop, but new data published by NetMarketShare for September show that the gap between this application and its rivals is increasing every month.

Google Chrome recorded a drop from 65,21% in August to 66,28% last month, showing once again that users are not really interested in other applications in the browser market.

It's a bit strange that this gap is getting wider and wider as others push their apps hard. Microsoft, for example, has often been accused in the past of being overly aggressive in its attempt to convince Windows 10 to use Edge.

Some of its tactics included advertisements that appeared on the desktop, and Microsoft thought of opening links in the default Mail application in the Edge browser regardless of users' configuration.

However, nothing worked, and instead, it seems that this push has rather backfired. Microsoft Edge fell from 4.30% to 4.08% market share last month.

Mozilla Firefox is the second with 9.62%, while Internet Explorer, which no longer receives new features but only security updates, reached 8.29%.

Microsoft will deliver a new set of updates to Edge with the release of the October 2018 Update this month. However, OS feature updates rarely create a significant boost in market share for Windows 10 and therefore Microsoft Edge is unlikely to benefit from this release.

The giant company headquartered in Redmond also continues to improve the mobile version of Microsoft Edge, but only on Android and iOS. The browser is also offered to Windows 10 Mobile users, but given the current state of the platform, no further features are being developed.

Microsoft Edge is evolving on all fronts, but so far it has not yet contributed to an increase in market share.
