Microsoft could launch a black Surface this year

Microsoft may release a black Surface model by the end of the year, according to a report, although there is no concrete information at this point and the existing information should be treated with caution.

First of all, Microsoft hasn't released a black Surface model in a long time, and the last one was the Surface 2 in 2013. Since then, the company has decided to stick with silver and then add burgundy to the lineup.

If a report from WindowsUnited is true, then a black version of the Surface could be released in the coming months, possibly with a series of hardware.

It's unclear at this time whether the black Surface will be an entirely new model or an upgrade to a specific device already in the company's lineup. If that's the case, the black Surface could simply be a minor hardware refresh of the Surface Book 2, for example, considering Microsoft adopted a similar concept for the first generation with the Performance Base package.

As for the new Surface models expected this year, we don't know much, although earlier reports suggested that a successor to the Surface Pro could be introduced. If that's the case, expect it to be unveiled in October or early November at the latest, as sales should start before the holiday season.

Further Surface upgrades are expected to be released in spring 2019, but it's obviously too early to discuss the planned improvements and possible new color versions coming to market.

For now, however, it's best to take the information with a grain of salt, regardless of whether a black Surface makes sense for Microsoft's lineup or not.
