There are signs that Nvidia may be working on a graphics card that could feature a whopping 12GB of GDDR6 memory. At least that's what a leaked image of an alleged Nvidia GPU looks like on Reddit. And while the original post has since been removed, we all know that what goes out on the internet stays out there forever.
The photo depicting the GPU prototype was uploaded by a Redditor named “dustinbrooks,” who claimed that the graphics card is in the testing phase. However, the promising chip appears to be far from complete, as it lacks some key components, such as a GPU core.
There are 12 GDDR6 memory chips located around where the main GPU core should be. According to TechPowerUp, these chips are 8Gbit GDDR6 modules made by Micron, with a data transfer rate of 14Gbps and operating at 1.35V.
The board features a 384-bit memory bus, which together with the 12GB of memory, provides a total memory bandwidth of 672 GB/s, outperforming both the Nvidia GTX 1080Ti and AMD's Vega 64.
The core that is not shown anywhere in the image could be assumed to be the successor to the Nvidia GP102 core, which is currently found in the 1080Ti.
It will consume more power than any other GPU, according to TechPowerUp's assumptions, as the image shows three 8-pin power connectors on the board.
However, in reality, all of this is still just a rumor. But rumors have become reality more and more often in recent years. It remains to be seen whether this one will ultimately turn out to be true.
