UK-based businesses have seen the biggest cost increases worldwide from DNS attacks, while one in five have also suffered a loss of sensitive data, according to the latest figures from EfficientIP.

DNS security companies surveyed 1,000 technology and security executives from January to April 2018 to compile their “2018 Global DNS Threat Report.”
The results showed that 77% of organizations suffered at least one attack in 2018, with an average of 7 attacks per organization.
There are various types of DNS attacks, the most well-known of which are: denial of service, DNS contamination via Malware and DNS tunneling. EfficientIP data revealed that the most popular attack was the attack using Malware and Phishing with a percentage of 36% of the total, followed by the other attacks DDoS, Domain lock-up and DNS tunneling with a percentage of 20%.
The survey clearly showed the huge impact attacks have on organizations. 40% of respondents said they had lost communication with their cloud storage, 33% had their data compromised, and 22% had lost sales.
The overall average cost per DNS attack is increasing by 57% per year, but in the UK the increase rate was 105%, with some companies paying up to $4 million per year.
“The research shows that the cost and frequency of attacks have increased in the financial sector,” said a spokesperson for EfficientIP. “A possible explanation could be that this particular city is an ideal target for hackers, as it provides profitable and vulnerable targets.”.
