Ever since Google began touting its mysterious Fuchsia in 2016, there have been repeated rumors that Google is trying to use Fuchsia instead of Android and Chrome OS.
In a recent development, Mishaal Rahman of XDA Developers spotted the Fuchsia operating system in the ART (Android Runtime) of AOSP. This finding could be very important for Google's future smartphone plans. This feature theoretically means that Android apps will be able to run on Fuchsia operating system.
In short, if Google is planning to replace the Android operating system with Fuchsia, this functionality will be the most crucial. It will allow users to use the same Android apps on devices running Fuchsia.
Furthermore, even if Google is simply pitching Fuchsia as an alternative to Android, it would still make sense to make apps compatible. Recruiting a crowd of developers and trying to entice them to create apps for Fuchsia is no easy feat. In the past, we've seen Microsoft fail in its Windows Mobile efforts due to a lack of developer interest.
As reports suggest, Fuchsia could turn out to be a complete operating system that runs on smartphones, tablets, and computers. So that's one reason why Google may be pushing it as its next operating system. Google also has a range of smart devices. Fuchsia could be on those devices too.
If you're wondering when Fuchsia will move beyond the experimental phase and become a usable operating system, unfortunately no such details are available at this time. However, you can follow the Fuchsia GitHub repo to stay up to date with anything new.
