GHOST funding from the European Research Council (ERC)

FORTH Researcher Dr. Marinos Sarigiannis was selected for funding by the European Research Council (ERC), for the GHOST research project

Dr. Marinos Sarigiannis received funding from the European Research Council Consolidator Grant (H2020-ERC-COG-2017) with the research project GHOST – Geographies and Histories of the Ottoman Supernatural Tradition: Exploring Magic, the Marvelous, and the Strange in Ottoman Mentalities. The project will investigate Ottoman concepts and beliefs concerning the supernatural.

Its main objectives will be to examine the significance and content of the various concepts of the "supernatural", to place them within the various Ottoman worldviews, to analyze the changes that occurred over time and to correlate them with the emergence of different cultural levels and social groups.

The program will stimulate broader discussions in recent historiography on concepts such as the “disenchantment of the world” or the “enlightenment,” thus integrating Ottoman intellectual history into the broader cultural history of early modernity. The research team includes scholars from Greece, Great Britain, Turkey, and the United States, who will participate as postdoctoral researchers, visiting researchers, and doctoral candidates.

Short biography

Marinos Sarigiannis was born in Athens in 1973. He studied history and archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and obtained his doctorate from the same university in 2005 (“Marginal groups and behaviors in Ottoman Constantinople, 16th^-18th^centuries ”). He has been working as a researcher at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of FORTH since 2007, focusing on Ottoman social, cultural and intellectual history.

In 2014-2015 he directed the research program "OTTPOL: A history of early modern Ottoman political thought, 15^th toearly19^th centuries" within the framework of the GSRT action "EXCELLENCE II" (ESRA 2007-2013). He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies/FORTH and a member of the editorial board of the journal Archivum Ottomanicum (Wiesbaden). He has published over fifty articles and chapters in journals such asTurcica, Archivum Ottomanicum, International Journal of Turkish Studies, Journal of Economic and Social History of the Orient, Turkish Historical Review, Der Islam and others. His latest monograph entitledA History of Ottoman Political Thought up to the Early Nineteenth Century is in press.
